Ten members of the “Man G” gang were found guilty and sentenced for armed robberies targeting businesses between 2018 and 2019 in several South African towns. Magistrate Hein Visagie said losses and security costs then drive up the costs borne by consumers, IOL reports.

Ten men from the “Man G Gang” were sentenced on Friday by the Durban Regional Court for armed robberies committed in several South African cities between 2018 and 2019, South African media outlet IOL reports. Magistrate Hein Visagie handed down sentences of up to 41 years in prison to Thabiso Mdletshe, who was found guilty on 14 counts of armed robbery.

The incidents targeted businesses in Durban Central, Estcourt, Pinetown, Tongaat and KwaDukuza. Former investigator Rajen Nagesar linked the accused to the robberies through identification procedures, fingerprints and video footage, according to court documents cited by IOL. The robberies involved cash, jewellery and mobile phones, among other things.

Philani Magongo was sentenced to 15 years in prison for one count of armed robbery, while Wanda Mcwabe received 31 years for nine counts and Michael Nxumalo 24 years for five counts. The outlet also reports that Khanyisani Thusi was convicted on four counts, but details of his sentence and those of the five other men were not included in the published material.

Magistrate Hein Visagie said the security and insurance costs borne by businesses could be passed on to consumers. The sentencing follows the ten men’s convictions, announced on 20 October in the case of the 19 armed robberies.
