The Durban Regional Court in South Africa has found ten men guilty of 19 armed robberies at businesses in KwaZulu-Natal between 2017 and 2019, IOL reports. The accused were due to appear on Tuesday to present evidence in mitigation of their sentences.
The robberies took place in central Durban, Estcourt, Pinetown, Tongaat and KwaDukuza, among other places. One of the men was also found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspects were linked to the crimes through identification procedures, fingerprints and video footage, according to former investigator Rajen Nagesar.
Nagesar described a group of ten to 15 men known as the “Man G Gang” in court documents. He said the gang had stolen money, jewellery and phones from several businesses, and that one suspect was also linked to a similar offence in Cape Town.
One of the accused, Philani Magongo, asked the court to take into account the nearly five years he spent in custody before his trial. Arrested in April 2019, he was released on bail in June 2023 and said he had attended hearings and worked as a delivery driver since his release.
