Chakwera blames MCP defeat on internal divisions

Former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera attributes the Malawi Congress Party’s defeat to internal divisions, selfishness and a lack of cooperation among his ministers. He also accused the current government of abandoning projects launched under his presidency, according to Malawi24.

Lazarus Chakwera, former president of Malawi and leader of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), attributed his party’s defeat in the 2025 elections to internal divisions, selfishness and a lack of cooperation among his ministers. He was speaking to MCP supporters in Chileka, Blantyre, according to Malawi24.

Chakwera accused some members of his former government of putting their personal interests before collective goals. He also criticised ministers for failing to work together, which he said weakened government action and contributed to the electoral defeat. The former president said leaving office had enabled him to learn lessons, without specifying the changes he envisaged for the MCP.

He also accused the current administration of abandoning projects and initiatives launched under his government. The remarks come after the Malawi Congress Party acknowledged its 2025 defeat, on 13 September, and as Chakwera’s convoy was targeted with stones in Blantyre on 25 October, according to an article published by Malawi24.
