Chimango Munthali, a member of the Football Association of Malawi executive committee, is seeking the support of its president, Fleetwood Haiya, in his bid for the Super League of Malawi presidency in 2027. Haiya says he will remain neutral, though he says he encouraged incumbent Gilbert Mittawa to stand again, according to Zodiak.

Chimango Munthali, a member of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee, sought the support of its president, Fleetwood Haiya, for his bid to become president of the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Malawi24 reports, citing an interview Haiya gave to Zodiak. Munthali is reportedly considering challenging incumbent president Gilbert Mittawa in the 2027 election.

Haiya said he would remain neutral and support no candidate. However, he said he had encouraged Mittawa to stand again, citing his experience at the helm of the league. The FAM president said the exchange did not amount to campaigning for the incumbent and that voters would decide freely.

According to Haiya, only Mittawa and Munthali had approached him personally at the time of the interview. Williams Banda, also named as a possible contender, had not contacted him. The election is for the leadership of Malawi’s top football league and is due to take place in 2027.
