Mozambique’s education and finance ministries are preparing the gradual payment of overtime owed to teachers since 2023. They are also seeking funding to print and distribute school textbooks for 2027, reports the Mozambican news agency AIM.

Mozambique’s ministries of Education and Finance are coordinating checks on the sums owed to teachers and preparing staggered payments for their overtime, reports the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM). The two ministries are also seeking to mobilise the funds needed to print and distribute school textbooks for the 2027 school year.

The dispute concerns unpaid overtime dating back to 2023. The National Association of Teachers of Mozambique (ANAPRO) says it has approached several institutions, including the ministries concerned, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Assembly of the Republic, without receiving a satisfactory response. It had said it had lost confidence in the government bodies with which it was negotiating.

Education Minister Edson Macuácua and Finance Minister Carla Louveira have committed to holding monthly meetings to monitor the checks, payments and funding for textbooks, according to AIM.

Mozambique recently rescheduled its debt repayments to China as part of the management of its financial commitments. The rescheduling of debt repayments to China is another financial matter being monitored by the government.
