Eight artisanal fishers died in two maritime accidents on 23 October in Mocímboa da Praia and Angoche, in northern Mozambique. The sinking of one boat also left two people missing and three survivors, according to maritime police cited by Cartamz.
Eight artisanal fishers died in two shipwrecks on 23 October in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces, after bad weather hit the country’s northern coastline, Cartamz reports.
In Mocímboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province, four bodies were found on the shore near the villages of Ulo and Luchete. The fishers, residents of Mocímboa da Praia town, had set out on a two-day trip when they were caught by bad weather.
The second shipwreck occurred on the same day off Angoche, in Nampula province, as an artisanal fishing boat was returning from sea. A source in the coastal, lake and river police said strong winds and swell had caused water to enter the boat. Four people died, two went missing and three survived among the nine fishers on board, most of whom belonged to the same family.
