Nigeria’s House of Representatives has given Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, seven legislative days to present the state of readiness for the 2027 general elections. The report must cover voter registration, PVCs, logistics, electoral technologies and funding, according to ThisDay.
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has ordered the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, to appear before its Committee on Electoral Matters within seven legislative days to outline the state of preparations for the 2027 general elections. The decision was adopted in plenary on Wednesday, ThisDay reports.
Lawmakers are requesting a detailed report on continuous voter registration, the production and distribution of permanent voter cards, logistics, the deployment of the BVAS biometric system and the IReV results viewing portal, as well as staff training and election security. The document must also specify approved appropriations, funds released, outstanding payments and the possible effects of a funding shortfall on the electoral timetable, according to ThisDay.
The House also wants INEC to draw lessons from the recently held Ekiti State governorship election, particularly on electoral technology, logistics, voter turnout and security coordination. The motion behind the request was presented by minority leader Mansur Manu Soro and deputy minority leader Abdussamad Dasuki, ThisDay reports.
The summons comes after Nigeria’s INEC announced a review of applications rejected for 2027, on 28 October.
