Fourteen people have been arrested after a police station in Ala, Ondo State, Nigeria, was attacked following the murder of farmer Rasheed Hassan, Nigerian daily Punch reports. Two police officers were wounded by gunfire during the assault.
According to the Ondo police command, two suspects linked to the murder were arrested on 26 October. As they were being taken to Ala police station, a crowd tried to seize them and kill them. The attackers threw stones and other dangerous objects at the building, while rescue teams tried to reach the area.
Police said their officers pulled the two suspects away from the crowd at about 1.45am on Tuesday. The vehicle taking them to Akure was also attacked, and two police officers were wounded by pellets fired, according to the authorities, from a homemade ‘pump-action’ firearm. The officers were taken to hospital.
The command condemned the attack and announced the deployment of tactical teams to restore order and protect residents. It said the investigation into Hassan’s death had found serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body, as well as the disappearance of his personal belongings.
