An attack attributed to Boko Haram killed at least five people on Monday in the communities of Gaya-Sikalmi and Gaya-Gartsanau, in Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria, the Daily Trust newspaper reports. Three residents were killed by gunfire and two others by the explosion of an improvised explosive device placed on the main access road.
Homes and businesses were also set on fire. Hong Local Government Area chairman Aliyu Saad Yerima visited the communities on Monday to assess the damage and offer his condolences. He condemned the attack and promised to increase support for local vigilante groups, hunters and security forces.
Aliyu Saad Yerima called on residents to remain vigilant and unite their efforts against armed groups and their suspected informants. He also provided financial assistance to families for funeral expenses. Security analysts quoted by the Daily Trust say the communities’ proximity to the Sambisa forest leaves them exposed to attacks.
