Nigeria’s Senate is calling for more security forces and new bases after the Binari attack in Taraba State reportedly killed about 80 people. It is also seeking emergency aid for affected communities, according to P.M. News.
Nigeria’s Senate on Wednesday called for additional soldiers to be deployed and new security camps to be created after an attack in Binari, Taraba State, which killed about 80 people, according to Pmnewsnigeria. The resolution was adopted following a motion by Senator Shuaibu Lau, who represents Taraba for the APC party.
The Senate called on security agencies to increase surveillance in the border areas between Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states. It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide immediate assistance to the affected communities. The senators observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims.
Shuaibu Lau’s motion highlighted population displacement and disruption to community life after the attack. The senator warned that repeated violence could lead to further loss of life, destruction and increased humanitarian needs, Pmnewsnigeria reported.
The call for reinforcements comes after the Taraba governor called for the perpetrators of the massacre in Binnari to be pursued on 24 October, followed by the six-month extension of the security alert in the state, announced on 27 October by Agbu Kefas.
