Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman as chair of the National Human Rights Commission’s board, along with Anthony Ojukwu as executive secretary and 14 other members. The new board is intended to strengthen the institutional framework for protecting human rights, following Bola Tinubu’s request for confirmation in April, according to Vanguard.

Nigeria’s Senate on Wednesday confirmed Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman as chair of the board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and Anthony Ojukwu as executive secretary. Eze Anaba, president of the Nigeria Guild of Editors and editor of the daily newspaper Vanguard, and 14 other members were also confirmed, according to the report presented by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

The reconstituted board includes representatives from the media and legal sectors, as well as security officials. The NHRC investigates alleged human rights violations, promotes human rights and monitors compliance with national and international standards.

President Bola Tinubu had submitted the nominations to the Senate in April, under the 2010 law that allows him to appoint the board subject to senators’ approval. The vote followed the Senate’s review of the 16 candidates, announced on 27 October in the confirmation process for the candidates.
