Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to authorise the transfer of convicted prisoners to countries outside the Commonwealth. The bill would allow prisoner-transfer agreements with those states to be implemented by presidential order, according to a letter read out by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to consider a bill allowing agreements on the transfer of convicted prisoners with countries outside the Commonwealth to be implemented. The request was made in a letter read out in the Senate on Tuesday by its president, Godswill Akpabio, according to Nigerian media outlet Leadership.

The bill would give the president the power to extend the law to any country that has a prisoner-transfer agreement with Nigeria, through an order published in the Federal Gazette. Tinubu presents the amendment as the legal framework needed to implement such agreements.

After the letter was read, Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, which is responsible for the next legislative stage before possible consideration in plenary.
