Cape Verdean elected officials and public officials are failing to update their declarations of interests, assets and income at the end of their terms, according to a review of Constitutional Court files by Inforpress. The law requires the update to be filed within 30 days of leaving office, but some local elected officials left their posts two years ago without submitting it, the agency reports.

Political officials and public managers in Cape Verde have not always updated their declarations of interests, assets and income at the end of their terms, Inforpress found after consulting files at the Constitutional Court. The law requires this declaration to be filed within 30 days of the end of the term.

The most notable cases concern municipal elected officials who left office two years ago. Inforpress also identified irregular declarations, including documents indicating the existence of bank accounts without specifying their balances, which prevents a full assessment of the declared assets.

This obligation has been in force since 1995 and applies in particular to MPs, government members, local elected officials, ambassadors and officials of public bodies. According to Inforpress, no effective penalty for failing to meet this obligation is known to date.
