Cabo Verdean Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho confirmed that audits would be conducted in all ministries, while the opposition denounced government patronage. The checks are to examine the management of public resources and files inherited from the previous administration, among other things, according to parliamentary statements reported by A Nação.
The Cabo Verdean government is conducting audits in all ministries to examine the use of public funds under the previous administration, MP Carla Lima said during a parliamentary debate on transparency and governance on Wednesday 28 October. Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho confirmed that the checks were under way at the National Assembly.
The reviews cover, among other things, the purchase of an aircraft for the Coast Guard, the management of the National Social Security Institute’s assets and contracts with CV Interilhas, the maritime transport operator. These cases concern decisions made under the MpD government, now in opposition.
The MpD accused the new administration of favouring its supporters in appointments to the public service, at the expense of merit and skills. The party said it would continue to scrutinise government action, including its results on the cost of living.
UCID MP João Santos Luís said the transparency portal was inadequate and called for concrete measures to improve openness. The debate follows MpD criticism of the government’s performance after its first 100 days in power (the shortcomings denounced by the MpD).
