Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has appointed a new government covering defence, agriculture, mining, energy and education, among other portfolios. The new ministers were sworn in in Lusaka and must respect the law, serve all citizens and protect investment, according to Zambian authorities.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema appointed a new government on Wednesday 28 October 2026, covering defence, agriculture, mining, energy and education, among other portfolios, after a swearing-in ceremony in Lusaka, Malawi Voice reported. Ambrose Lufuma becomes Minister of Defence, Clement Andeleki Minister of the Interior and Moses Moyo Minister of Agriculture.

Brenda Tambatamba takes the mining portfolio, Peter Kapala the electricity portfolio and Harry Kamboni the education portfolio. The president asked the new ministers to respect the Constitution, serve all citizens without discrimination and not delay investment. He warned that officials obstructing projects would be considered to be behaving improperly in government, according to Malawi Voice.

The announced line-up also includes Elvis Nkandu as Minister of Information and Media, Jack Mwiimbu as Minister of Justice, Felix Mutati as Minister of Technology and Science, and Likando Mufalali as Minister of Youth and Sport. Hichilema called on political leaders and citizens to favour civil and respectful debate, Malawi Voice reported.

The appointments come after a Zambian editorial called on Hakainde Hichilema on 4 October to implement his agricultural programme, as agriculture is now among the portfolios assigned. The editorial on Hichilema’s agricultural programme made that appeal.
