Harry Kane won the men’s Ballon d’Or in London, becoming the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001, thanks in particular to his 73 goals in 65 matches the previous season. Alexia Putellas claimed the women’s award for the third time after helping FC Barcelona win the Champions League, according to the ceremony report.
Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time at the ceremony held in London on Monday, while England’s Harry Kane claimed the men’s trophy, reports the Ghanaian Times. Putellas was rewarded after helping Barcelona win the Champions League last season, before joining English club London City Lionesses.
Harry Kane, the 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker, scored 73 goals in 65 matches for his club and the England national team last season. He is the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001 and finished ahead of Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé.
Lamine Yamal, a winger for FC Barcelona, finished third and won the best young player award for the third consecutive time. Kylian Mbappé came second. Alexia Putellas succeeds her Spain team-mate Aitana Bonmatí, who won the previous three editions, according to the Ghanaian Times.
Harry Kane’s win extends a run that had already seen him claim the Gerd Müller Trophy before the ceremony. On 27 October, the striker had also thanked his loved ones after winning the Ballon d’Or.
