Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema participated remotely in the extraordinary summit of the heads of state and government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). According to Lusaka Times, he supported discussions aimed at strengthening the organisation’s secretariat, regional integration, and peace and security in its member states.
The summit, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, elected Lesotho to head the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation Troika. The organ is involved in conflict prevention and mediation, as well as security issues in eastern DR Congo and northern Mozambique.
The leaders also appointed Treasure Maphanga as deputy executive secretary for regional integration. Her appointment is intended to contribute to the implementation of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan, particularly in cross-border infrastructure, electricity generation and transmission, and trade between member states.
Cyril Ramaphosa said strong institutions were needed to turn regional decisions into tangible improvements for people. SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi said the summit was to address two issues deferred at the Durban summit in August.
