Russia plans to sign mining cooperation agreements with six additional African countries, bringing the number of bilateral partnerships concluded or under consideration to 27. The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment announced the prospect to the TASS news agency on the eve of the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow.
The 21 agreements already in force cover joint geological research, data exchange and the preparation of investment projects, according to the ministry. It cites African reserves of rare earths, lithium and gold, without linking these minerals to the future agreements. The Russia-Africa summit opened on 28 October in Moscow, after the announcement was published on 27 October.
Russia presents the cooperation as being adapted to each country’s mining potential and to its partners’ demands. The agreements come amid a period of closer relations between Moscow and several African governments, including Equatorial Guinea, where Obiang and Putin are considering a bilateral economic commission.
