A delegation of experts from the National Agency for the Valorisation of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT), the Algerian body responsible for promoting oil and gas resources, is working in Niger from 26 to 30 October to modernise the national oil data bank, according to Niger’s Ministry of Petroleum. The mission covers infrastructure, equipment, software, human resources and data security.
The Algerian experts are expected to assess the existing system, then draw up recommendations and a technical and financial roadmap. Niger’s Ministry of Petroleum said the work should also strengthen the skills of Nigerien officials.
The mission comes as part of efforts to strengthen energy cooperation between Niamey and Algiers. It follows in particular the intervention by technicians from Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned oil company, after the eruption of the Goumeri W-8 well in the Agadem field, and runs alongside the Kafra oil project, which could contain 2.5 billion barrels according to estimates published on 13 September. Niger and Algeria also inaugurated a 40-megawatt power plant donated by Algiers in June.
