Ghana plans to name landlords demanding rent in dollars

Acting Rent Control Commissioner Fredrick Opoku says landlords demanding payments in dollars could be publicly named and reported to the Bank of Ghana. The department plans to strengthen their identification despite the central bank not responding to a cooperation proposal made five months earlier, Starr FM reports.

Ghana plans to publicly identify landlords who demand rent payments in US dollars and report them to the Bank of Ghana, Fredrick Opoku, acting commissioner of the Rent Control Department, warned on Starr FM. He said the department plans to deploy a monitoring team from 2027 to identify such transactions.

Fredrick Opoku said his department had proposed five months earlier that the Bank of Ghana work with it to counter the use of foreign currencies for domestic rent payments. According to him, the central bank had not responded to the proposal. The acting commissioner said his department was ready to support the bank’s efforts but could not take on its responsibilities alone.

He nevertheless said the Rent Control Department would continue its efforts and could make public the names of the landlords concerned, regardless of their social status. The Bank of Ghana is the institution expected to play a central role in enforcing measures against dollar payments in the domestic market.
