Young people in Atwima Kwanwoma District, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, say they joined underground mining despite the risks because of unemployment and poverty. Some say they completed secondary or higher education but remain unemployed and have few means of supporting themselves, reports The Ghana Report.
The testimonies thus link their involvement in this dangerous activity to the lack of job opportunities for young people who nonetheless have qualifications. The miners concerned are seeking a source of income in underground shafts in Atwima Kwanwoma District, according to The Ghana Report.
