Sonatrach submits report after Goumeri W-8 well eruption

Sonatrach experts have completed their support mission in Niger following the oil and gas eruption at the Goumeri W-8 well in the Agadem block. The Algerian delegation submitted its report to Niger’s ministries of petroleum and the environment after assessing the damage, environmental risks and safety measures, according to Tamtaminfo.

Algeria’s state-owned oil company Sonatrach has submitted its final report to Niger’s ministries of petroleum and the environment on the eruption at the Goumeri W-8 wells, in the Agadem oil block, Tamtaminfo reports. The document sets out technical findings, residual risks and recommendations intended to enable the wells to be brought back under control sustainably.

The Algerian experts, sent to Niger at the direction of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, analysed the circumstances of the incident, assessed technical and environmental damage and took part in securing the site. The eruption, which occurred on 25 September 2026, sent crude oil and gas more than ten metres into the air, according to Nigerien authorities.

The delegation travelled to Agadem on 14 October with Nigerien Minister of Petroleum Hamadou Tinni and Minister of the Environment Abdoulaye Maizama. At the end of the mission, its members were received by Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani, in the presence of the two ministers, Tamtaminfo reports.

The report is expected in particular to help Nigerien authorities determine measures to limit the flow of crude oil and the environmental impacts linked to the incident.
