CAF is reinstating AFCON every two years, having abandoned the four-year cycle considered in 2025, according to Le Soleil and Seneweb. President Patrice Motsepe justified the decision by the need to protect the interests of African football and secure the resources needed for its development, Le Soleil reports. Seneweb says the next editions will take place in 2027, 2028, 2031 and 2033.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided on Thursday to reinstate the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every two years. Its executive committee adopted the measure unanimously, according to Le Soleil and Seneweb. It is abandoning the four-year cycle considered in 2025, which was to be accompanied by a new competition, the Nations League.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe said uncertainty over the financial returns from the Nations League could delay funding for the development of African football. The return to a biennial schedule should, in his view, protect the interests of CAF’s 54 member associations and African players at clubs outside the continent, Le Soleil reports.
Seneweb says the next AFCON will be held in 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The following editions are scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033, in particular to avoid a clash with the 2030 World Cup.
