La Liga president Javier Tebas met China’s ambassador to Spain to try to preserve relations between Spanish football and Chinese sports institutions after remarks by Kylian Mbappé. The meeting focused on ways to move beyond the controversy and protect the partnership between the Spanish league and China, according to Javier Tebas.

The cooperation includes a strategic partnership with the Chinese Professional Football League, running until 2029, as well as agreements with China Media Group and other joint projects. Javier Tebas said La Liga wanted to continue broadcasting its competitions to millions of Chinese supporters and prevent an individual incident from jeopardising the progress made.

The meeting comes after public apologies from Kylian Mbappé and Real Madrid following the controversy over the player’s remarks about Mao. It follows Chinese television’s suspension of La Liga broadcasts and La Liga’s apology to China.
