Chinese state television suspends broadcasts of La Liga matches after Kylian Mbappé’s remarks about Mao Zedong. China Media Group, which oversees CCTV, also removes adverts linked to the French Real Madrid forward, AFP reports.
Chinese state television has suspended broadcasts of Spanish football league matches, La Liga, following remarks by Kylian Mbappé about Mao Zedong, the former Chinese leader. China Media Group (CMG), the state-owned group overseeing CCTV, announced the measure on Tuesday 27 October, AFP reports.
CMG also suspended advertisements featuring the French Real Madrid forward. The decision followed the circulation online of a video in which Mbappé appeared to joke about Mao. Two Chinese brands had already terminated their contracts with the player, who apologised for his remarks the same day.
The suspension of the broadcasts extends the repercussions of the controversy to the Spanish league, beyond Mbappé’s individual advertising contracts. The termination of the two brand contracts and the player’s apology were reported on 27 October in the termination of contracts by Chinese brands and Mbappé’s apology.
