La Liga president Javier Tebas apologised to the Chinese population after Kylian Mbappé’s remarks about Mao Zedong. The move follows Chinese partners ending agreements with the player and Chinese public television suspending Spanish league matches, according to 24heureinfo.
La Liga apologised to the Chinese population on Tuesday following Kylian Mbappé’s remarks about Mao Zedong, its president Javier Tebas said. The head of the Spanish professional football organisation said he wanted to dissociate the Real Madrid striker’s comments from the interests of the league, its clubs and its Chinese supporters.
The reaction follows the circulation of a viral video in which Mbappé calls Mao a “Chinese dictator” while commenting on a photo montage. Several Chinese partners have ended their agreements with the player and Chinese public television has suspended broadcasts of some La Liga matches, 24heureinfo reports.
Javier Tebas said La Liga could not allow one person’s remarks to harm its relations with Chinese supporters and partners. The organisation’s statement comes after Mbappé’s apology over his remarks about Mao in China, published on 27 October, and the suspension of La Liga broadcasts by Chinese television on the same day.
