Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo can return to the Swiss national team in November after their suspensions over the use of fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates. The two players were fined 150,000 Swiss francs and given a suspended two-year sanction, BBC Sport reports.

Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will be able to return to the Swiss national team in November after being sanctioned in the case of fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) confirmed on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Sunderland midfielder and the 29-year-old striker can be selected by coach Murat Yakin for the Nations League matches against Slovenia and Scotland.

The two players were fined 150,000 Swiss francs, with the penalty suspended for two years provided they commit no further offence. Xhaka, who admitted obtaining a fake certificate to travel and play in 2022, will retain the captain’s armband for now, but the final decision rests with Murat Yakin, who will announce his squad on 5 November, according to the SFV.

Swiss national team director Pierluigi Tami said the circumstances of each case, the conclusion of the legal proceedings and the sporting consequences already applied had all been taken into account. Switzerland, top of Group E, will face Slovenia on 13 November and Scotland on 16 November.
