The Student List received 2.24 million votes, compared with 1.67 million for the SNS. Its main candidate, Ilija Srdanović, said the movement wanted to “free the country from tyranny”. It was formed in response to the collapse of a canopy in front of Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16 people and triggered protests against corruption and negligence.
The results are a new tally following Aleksandar Vučić’s concession of defeat on 25 October. Vučić is the outgoing president and head of the SNS. The Student List’s victory has opened a political transition in Serbia, according to our 26 October report.
