The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak has recorded 10,193 confirmed cases and 4,960 deaths, five months after it began. The Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain has reached 10,193 confirmed cases and 4,960 deaths in Africa, according to the latest Africa CDC data reported by Gabonclic. Declared in May 2026, it is the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded on the continent and has been classified by the WHO as a public health emergency of international concern.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the outbreak’s epicentre, with the virus spreading across eight provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, Tshopo and North Ubangi. Transmission chains or imported cases have also been identified in Uganda, Kenya, the Central African Republic and Nigeria, where a case detected in Abuja involves the wife of a diplomat who travelled through Uganda.
Africa CDC estimates that the rate of deaths is twice that seen during the 2014-2016 West African outbreak. No vaccine or approved treatment is currently available for the Bundibugyo strain, while armed conflict and restrictions on humanitarian access are complicating the response in eastern DR Congo.
In Kenya, nine cases, including two deaths, have been recorded in Nairobi. Uganda, which declared itself temporarily Ebola-free in August, has introduced new quarantine and traveller screening measures, including after imported cases were detected in the region.
