Bo District, Sierra Leone, recorded five maternal deaths between early July and early October 2026, compared with 16 over the same period in 2025, a decline of 68.8%. Health Minister Austin Demby nevertheless called for continued efforts after 10 deaths were recorded in May, reports Sierra Loaded.

Bo District, Sierra Leone, recorded five maternal deaths between the beginning of July and the beginning of October 2026, compared with 16 over the same period in 2025, a decline of 68.8%. The figures were presented on Friday 30 October in Bo at a meeting led by Health Minister Austin Demby and Chief Medical Officer Mustapha Kabba, according to Sierra Loaded.

The decline came after a difficult start to the year for the district, which recorded 10 maternal deaths in May, its highest monthly total of 2026. The number of deaths then fell to three in June and July, and to one in August, September and October, according to data presented at the meeting.

The meeting was part of the government’s 300-day action campaign for the ‘Triple Zero’ objective, which mobilises health workers and communities against preventable maternal deaths. Nationwide, Sierra Leone recorded a 31.3% decline in maternal deaths compared with the corresponding period in 2025, according to the Ministry of Health.
