In Kaolack, neurologist Samba Sarr says strokes account for about one-third of the consultations received by his department, or 10 patients out of 30. The neurology department at Elhadji Ibrahima Niass Regional Hospital held a screening and awareness day on 29 October 2026, Dakaractu reports.
Strokes account for one-third of neurology consultations at Elhadji Ibrahima Niass Regional Hospital in Kaolack, Dr Samba Sarr, head of the neurology department, said on 29 October 2026. About 10 of the 30 patients seen come for a stroke, he said during World Stroke Day.
Dr Sarr cited high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol among the factors that promote these incidents. The causes vary according to age: among children and adolescents, heart disease is the most common, while among older people it is accompanied by atherosclerosis, a disease of the arteries.
Dr Malick Ngom, head of the internal medicine department and coordinator of the diabetes centre at the same hospital, recommended a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, reducing salt and added sugars, and regular physical activity. The awareness day in Kaolack also made it possible to screen nearly 100 people.
This mobilisation comes amid Senegal’s health news, following the publication on 26 October of a report of 422 diphtheria cases and 14 deaths in Senegal.
