Senegal’s National Police denies that officers are making home visits for a purported census or identity checks, a rumour circulating on social media. It says it has opened an investigation to identify those responsible and urges the public to verify communications through its official channels, according to its statement of 29 October.

Senegal’s National Police on 29 October denied posts claiming that police officers were conducting a population census or identity checks at people’s homes. In a statement, the National Police Directorate General described the messages as fake news and said the operations were not organised by its services or the Ministry of the Interior.

The police urged citizens not to trust the claims and to check communications through its official channels. It said an investigation had been opened to identify and arrest those responsible for the deception.
