Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has asked Russia to support the implementation of UN resolutions on the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from eastern DR Congo. In Moscow, he also advocated diversified partnerships and verifiable implementation of diplomatic commitments, according to the Congolese presidency.
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi on Thursday called on Russia to support the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 2773 and 2808, which notably demand the withdrawal of the M23 and Rwandan forces from the territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He made the request in Moscow, on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa summit, according to details of his speech sent by the Congolese presidency.
Félix Tshisekedi also called for compliance with demands to cease hostilities, end support for armed groups and neutralise the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). He said Kinshasa favoured the diplomatic processes in Washington and Doha, with African Union mediation, but wanted the commitments to be implemented verifiably on the ground.
The position came on the same day as the Congolese president’s calls for the implementation of UN resolutions on eastern Congo and the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from the DRC. It forms part of his advocacy, presented on 29 October, for diversifying the DRC’s partnerships.
