Tibor Nagy urges Washington to sanction Kinshasa too

Tibor Nagy, a former US assistant secretary of state for African affairs, is calling on Washington to also sanction armed groups supported by Kinshasa after measures targeting Rwanda’s defence ministry and the M23. Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba says the situations are nevertheless incomparable, Actualité.cd reports.

Tibor Nagy, a former US assistant secretary of state for African affairs, is calling on Washington to also sanction armed groups supported by Kinshasa, after measures were taken against Rwanda. He believes sanctioning only one side will not end the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Actualité.cd.

The former US official said President Félix Tshisekedi’s government has armed groups that threaten Rwanda and called for all the «troublemakers» to be targeted. Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner rejected this comparison, saying that a real or presumed threat could not be equated with the thousands of deaths and millions of displaced people caused by violence in the east of the country, according to Actualité.cd.

Tibor Nagy’s position comes after sanctions announced by the United States on 28 October against Rwanda’s Ministry of Defence and Zigama Credit and Savings Society, a financial institution for members of Rwanda’s security forces. Washington accuses the latter of facilitating transactions worth several million dollars for the M23 and the transport of gold from mining sites controlled by the rebel group. These measures follow the decision in which Washington deemed Rwanda’s support for the M23 illegal.
