The Democratic Republic of the Congo has committed to finalising a timetable for military operations against FDLR rebels under the Washington agreement. Congolese and Rwandan planners prepared the draft on 20 and 22 October in Germany, according to the US State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is working to finalise a military operations plan to neutralise the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a rebel group active in the east of the country, under the Washington agreements, Ktpress reports, citing the US State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs.

Congolese and Rwandan military planners met from 20 to 22 October in Garmisch, Germany, as part of the Joint Security Coordination Mechanism. They worked on a draft operations order that still requires approval and is intended to govern Kinshasa’s actions as well as Kigali’s lifting of its defensive measures, according to the US State Department.

The meeting, organised by the United States with the participation of the African Union, Qatar and US agencies, was described by Washington as constructive. It followed a commitment made at the mechanism’s sixth meeting in August and forms part of preparations for the disarmament of the FDLR and the withdrawal of Rwandan troops.
