The National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recommended that Higher and University Education Minister Marie-Thérèse Sombo leave the government, following a parliamentary inquiry that identified suspected embezzlement involving fees paid by students. Prime Minister Judith Suminwa is due to receive the resolutions from 27 October and decide what action to take, according to Lepotentiel.

The National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recommended that Higher and University Education Minister Marie-Thérèse Sombo leave the government. MPs unanimously approved the findings of a parliamentary inquiry committee, Lepotentiel reports.

Set up three months earlier to examine the use of the ministry’s financial resources, the committee identified suspicions of embezzlement involving portions deducted from fees paid by students. These suspicions do not constitute a definitive finding by the competent authorities.

The National Assembly bureau is to send the resolutions to Prime Minister Judith Suminwa from Tuesday 27 October. She will consider the recommendations; the MPs’ vote does not automatically remove the minister from office.
