Ugandan Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka says military operations by Uganda’s army in DR Congo have weakened the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). He made the remarks on 27 October during a meeting in Kampala with the European Union’s special representative for the Great Lakes region, according to Nile Post.
Ugandan Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka says Uganda’s military operations in DR Congo have weakened the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group active in the east of the country. “We have succeeded in neutralising most of the ADF, and this group is no longer a problem for the Congolese,” he said on 27 October, according to Ugandan media outlet Nile Post.
Kiwanuka made the remarks during a meeting in Kampala with Johan Borgstam, the European Union’s special representative for the Great Lakes region. He presented operations in DR Congo and Uganda’s participation in peacekeeping missions in Somalia as a contribution to regional security, while asserting that military action must respect the sovereignty of the countries concerned.
The minister called on African states to prioritise dialogue in resolving conflicts and warned against external interference. He also praised the European Union’s partnership with Uganda, particularly in humanitarian assistance and refugee protection. Borgstam, for his part, praised the role of the Ugandan army in operations against the ADF in DR Congo and Somalia.
