French Mirage fighter jets and a tanker aircraft carrying around 30 military personnel are due to travel to Chad from Gabon, as the Chadian and French military staffs resume direct exchanges after the departure of French troops, according to TV5 Monde. The relocation is in response to concerns from the Chadian army about regional security tensions.
The discussions concern counter-terrorism efforts around Lake Chad and insurgent threats along the borders with Sudan, Libya and the Central African Republic. The Chadian military staff is also concerned about the consequences of an uncertain political transition in neighbouring Cameroon, according to TV5 Monde.
Diplomatic sources close to the discussions between N’Djamena and Paris nevertheless believe there has been no real breakdown in dialogue between the two countries. The resumption of contacts comes after an armed incursion at the Central African border and as Chadian rebels are alleged to have been armed near Tissi.
