Chadian Prime Minister Allah-Maye Halina called for urgent measures to tackle the dengue outbreak after seeing an influx of patients at two hospitals in N’Djamena, Tchadinfos reports. At the National Reference General Hospital, patients were lying on the floor because no beds were available.
At the Chad-China Friendship Hospital, the emergency department is facing a rise in patient numbers while doctors are on strike over demands to harmonise their allowances. A minimum service is being maintained. Allah-Maye Halina asked health officials to find an immediate solution to the strike to ensure continuity of care.
The prime minister also asked officials from the Ministry of Health and the hospitals concerned to mobilise the resources needed to contain the outbreak and increase capacity. He was briefed on progress with the expansion of the Chad-China Friendship Hospital, which includes construction of an emergency centre.
The visit came six days after figures published on 22 October put the toll in Chad at 3,846 suspected cases and 11 deaths linked to dengue, as reported in the outbreak figures.
