Tshisekedi calls for support in fight against Kabila’s armed alliance

President Félix Tshisekedi is calling on Congolese people, opposition allies and foreign countries to support his fight against former president Joseph Kabila and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation. The political and military alliance, announced in Goma on 12 October, is cooperating with M23 rebels, Mwananchi reports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo President Félix Tshisekedi has called on Congolese people, opposition allies and foreign partners to support him in confronting Joseph Kabila and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a politico-military coalition led by the former president. Tshisekedi made the appeal at a meeting in Kinshasa with MPs and senators from his Union sacrée, RFI Swahili reports.

The FRN, which is cooperating with M23 rebels, was officially announced on 12 October in Goma, in eastern DR Congo. The coalition says it wants to overthrow the government and is considering all means, including force. Tshisekedi accused Kabila of choosing armed struggle after leading the country from 2001 to 2019.

The president’s appeal came after Kabila took the lead of the FRN, a few days before the Kinshasa meeting. On 13 October, the formation of the armed coalition was reported in an announcement by Joseph Kabila. On 15 October, Germain Kambinga also called for support for Tshisekedi against Kabila’s Front.
