Louis Watum seeks clarity on Congolese mining capital participation

DR Congo’s Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba wants to advance the decree clarifying Congolese participation in mining companies’ capital. Discussions with operators in Lualaba also cover artisanal mining and environmental obligations, according to Le Potentiel.

DR Congo’s Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba has begun discussions in Lualaba with mining operators to clarify the arrangements for Congolese participation in the capital of companies in the sector. He called for progress on the draft implementing decree provided for by the Mining Code revised in 2018, according to Le Potentiel.

The discussions also focused on the expansion of artisanal mining and the strengthening of companies’ environmental obligations. The meeting was held in the presence of the Environment Minister, Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka Saini, the Chamber of Mines, the Federation of Enterprises of Congo and several public services, Le Potentiel reports.

The discussion comes after the publication of the mining regulation reserving 5% of capital for workers, which specified another national participation obligation. It also follows the reopening of the mining trading centre in Kolwezi, announced on 27 October.
