The Nigerian Communications Commission is asking operators to turn their network investments into measurable improvements in service quality. Its director-general Aminu Maida made the demand in Lagos at the launch of Airtel Nigeria’s Open Network platform, according to Leadership.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on telecoms operators to link their investments in network expansion to measurable improvements in service quality. Its executive vice-chairman and chief executive, Aminu Maida, made the appeal in Lagos at the launch of Airtel Nigeria’s Open Network platform, Leadership reports.
Aminu Maida asked operators to publish more precise information about their existing infrastructure, expansion work and deployment plans, while responding promptly to subscribers’ complaints. He noted that the presence of a base station in a locality did not guarantee a good connection, due in particular to network congestion and transmission limits, according to Leadership.
The NCC also wants to strengthen its monitoring through independent measurements carried out by users and a one-kilometre-by-one-kilometre assessment grid. Aminu Maida warned that coverage shown as satisfactory at this scale could mask localised problems in some communities, Leadership reports.
The regulator’s demand comes as Airtel Nigeria added more than 1,000 5G sites in 2026, according to information presented in a linked article about its network expansion. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu had also asked the operator to improve its coverage and telecoms services.
