Nigeria’s electoral commission says it wants to organise credible, transparent and peaceful general elections in 2027, as the national register exceeds 103 million voters. INEC has completed nine of the 14 planned stages and will deploy resources across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, according to its chairman Joash Amupitan.
The chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, told a mission from the Economic Community of West African States on Friday that the body was preparing credible and peaceful general elections in 2027, reports Punch. He said INEC would act impartially and that its loyalty was to Nigerians.
The commission has completed nine of the 14 main stages set out in its revised timetable, according to Amupitan. It has also completed three phases of continuous voter registration and the nationwide display of the provisional register.
INEC plans to deploy resources across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, covering 774 local government areas and 176,846 polling units. It intends to use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System to verify fingerprints and faces, as well as electronic tools to manage and consult results.
The preparations are based on a national electoral register with more than 103 million registered voters, a figure published by INEC on 30 October. The commission has also recorded 5,400 voter-register challenges, according to another announcement on 30 October.
