Nigeria’s electoral commission has detected photographs suspected of being generated by artificial intelligence and other irregularities in the provisional voter register. Its director of information technology, Lawrence Bayode, attributed the anomalies to some registration officers in a television interview reported by Vanguard.

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said some registration officers had entered photos suspected of being generated by artificial intelligence into the preliminary voter register. Its director of information and communication technology, Lawrence Bayode, attributed the irregularities to officers with access credentials to the database, in an interview with Arise Television on Friday, Vanguard reports.

Bayode said other images came from poor-quality registration procedures. The commission detected the suspicious records through its automated biometric identification system and began cleaning the register before publishing its preliminary version. It is acting within the legal 90-day period, he added.

The disclosure follows the publication of the preliminary register on 26 October. Screenshots shared on social media showed suspicious photos associated with voters in Edo State. Users also reported duplicate entries and missing data. INEC had already published the preliminary voter register for 2027.
