Benin’s Episcopal Conference is calling on the government to act against violence, poverty and security threats, and to take steps to humanise justice. The bishops made these requests at their plenary session in Natitingou from 25 to 28 October 2026, according to the conference’s final statement.
The Episcopal Conference of Benin has called on the government to step up action against violence, poverty and security threats. The bishops made the request in the final statement of their 79th ordinary plenary session, held from 25 to 28 October 2026 in Natitingou, Bénin Web TV reports.
The prelates cited begging, armed robberies, rape, abuse of minors and drug use. They linked these problems to the difficulties some people face in meeting their basic needs and called on the authorities to improve living conditions.
On judicial and political matters, the bishops advocated measures to humanise justice and resolve certain political situations. They also welcomed the reforms undertaken by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni and his government to promote citizens’ well-being.
The call concerning justice follows the 12 October opening of the judicial year of the Court for the Repression of Economic Offences and Terrorism, which focused on balancing criminal severity with respect for human dignity and fundamental rights. In January, the bishops had called for peace to be preserved during the elections. Benin’s Justice Minister also wants to speed up trials in Parakou.
