Abia State Governor Alex Otti says south-east Nigerian governors are continuing efforts to secure the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, detained after being sentenced to life imprisonment. Negotiations with the federal authorities remain confidential, he said in Umuahia, according to ThisDay.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has assured that the governors of south-east Nigeria are continuing their efforts with the federal authorities to secure the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafran separatist movement. The negotiations are continuing privately, Alex Otti said at his monthly press conference in Umuahia, according to ThisDay.

Nnamdi Kanu is serving a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja, ThisDay recalls. Alex Otti said the governors would not make details of their exchanges with the federal government public.

The governor also announced a reduction in Abia State’s debt, from 147.2 billion naira in the second quarter of 2023 to 48.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026. He attributed the increase in external debt to drawdowns from existing multilateral financing, notably for the Abia Integrated Infrastructure Development and Rural Access to Agricultural Markets projects, while saying that his administration had taken out no direct loans.
