Talib Ahmed Bensouda, leader of the UNITE party and the Coalition 2026 candidate in Gambia’s presidential election on 5 December, accused President Adama Barrow of seeking to block his candidacy. At a Coalition 2026 rally in Brufut, he called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to preserve its autonomy and resist political interference, Kerr Fatou reports.
Bensouda directly addressed the IEC chairman, asking him to guarantee the commission’s independence during the electoral process, according to Kerr Fatou. The opposition figure had already presented proposals on governance, security and social reforms as part of his campaign.
The statement comes after Bensouda presented governance and security reforms on 28 October, followed by social reforms on 29 October, ahead of the 5 December presidential election.
