Ousainou Darboe, leader of Gambia’s United Democratic Party and candidate for the Gambia First coalition, unveiled a programme promising a single five-year presidential term if elected. He also pledged to cut his salary by 20% and reduce the Presidency’s budget in his first 100 days, according to Kerr Fatou.

Gambian opposition leader Ousainou Darboe reiterated his promise to serve only one five-year term if elected president, during the launch of the Gambia First Alliance-UDP coalition’s programme. The presidential election is scheduled for 5 December, Kerr Fatou reports.

Darboe also promised to reduce the budget of the presidential office and cut his salary by 20% during his first 100 days in office. He presented these measures as an example of budgetary discipline and shared sacrifice during a period of economic difficulty.

The programme, entitled “The Gambia We Want”, includes economic reforms aimed at boosting domestic production, creating jobs and reducing the country’s dependence on imports. Darboe also referred to rising food prices, difficulties accessing electricity and healthcare, and the lack of jobs.
