The local council election in Nigeria’s Imo State, scheduled for 7 November 2026, has been postponed indefinitely. The chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, Charles Ejiogu, announced the postponement on Saturday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri, reports Vanguard.
Charles Ejiogu said the commission was forced to cancel the poll on the scheduled date, without giving a specific reason. ISIEC must set a new date, timetable and guidelines as soon as possible.
The poll had already been scheduled for 26 September before being prevented by legal proceedings, according to the state government. The commission also announced that it would work with the police, army, navy, air force, DSS and NSCDC to prepare security for the next vote, while calling on parties to sign a peace agreement.
