Senegalese gendarmes arrested 27 people in Djifer, Fatick region, as they prepared to cross by pirogue to Spain; 19 are Senegalese and eight are Gambian. An investigation is to establish how the departure was organised, reports Xibaaru.
Twenty-seven people, including 19 Senegalese and eight Gambians, were arrested on Friday evening on Djifer beach in Fatick region as they prepared to travel to Spain by pirogue. The operation, carried out at around 8.30pm by the Fimela territorial brigade with support from Fatick’s Surveillance and Intervention Squadron, took those arrested to the gendarmerie unit, reports Xibaaru, cited by Senego.
The people arrested had travelled from several regions of Senegal and from The Gambia in public transport vehicles. The investigation is to establish, among other things, how the planned crossing was organised, according to Xibaaru.
The operation comes a week after three raids carried out on 20, 21 and 22 October by units of the Fatick gendarmerie company, which led to 378 people being arrested. On 22 October, gendarmes also seized three pirogues, three outboard motors and 5,800 litres of fuel near the Iranne bolong. It is part of a series of reported arrests of migrants, including in Mbour on 28 October.
